Any govt. that betrays farmers will fall: DMK leader Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan

Ms. Jagadeesan was here to meet five members of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association from Dharapuram detained in the Coimbatore Central Prison for organising a protest on September 13 against the installation of towers for high-tension power lines on agricultural lands.

Any government that betrays farmers will fall, senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said here on Thursday.

Ms. Jagadeesan was here to meet five members of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association from Dharapuram, who were detained in the Coimbatore Central Prison for organising a protest on September 13 against the installation of towers for high-tension power lines on agricultural lands.

Ms. Jagadeesan told mediapersons outside the prison that the farmers had been protesting for the past six months, pointing out the ill-effects of the power lines, and accused Electricity Minister P. Thangamani of speaking in favour of the Central government on this issue. The DMK was clear on opposing any project that affects farmers, she said.

When The Hindu asked Ms. Jagadeesan about the burning of copies of the Indian Telegraph Act during the farmers’ protests, she said the DMK supported the protests.

“The protests were organised against transmission towers, so we definitely support it,” she said.

On Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s claim that he did not seek to impose Hindi on anyone, she said Mr. Shah was into damage control after facing criticism for his previous comments.

While the DMK did not object to anyone learning Hindi, it would certainly oppose any attempt by the Central Government to impose it on anyone, she said.
