The modern control room of the city police started receiving feeds from the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed by the public initiative ‘Uyir’ on Avinashi Road here between JM Bakery junction and Lakshmi Mills junction.
The feeds from the ANPR cameras will enable the police to trace those crossing the stop line and impose fines on the violators.
“The ANPR will identify the registration number of the vehicles which crosses the stop line at signals. Apart from the video recording of the violation, a photo of the violation will automatically be clicked. This will have details such as the registration number of the vehicle, the date and time of the violation. The police can impose fines on violations based on this,” said S. Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospitals, a trustee of Uyir.
He said that Uyir has plans to fix ANPR cameras at 40 major signals on Avinashi Road, Tiruchi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Pollachi Road and Palakkad Road which falls in the limits of the city police. Around ₹25 crore will be required to install ANPR cameras at the all traffic signals in Coimbatore district.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development S.P. Velumani on Saturday formally inaugurated the ANPR cameras fixed between JM Bakery junction and Lakshmi Mills junction and inspected feeds.
Mr. Velumani also flagged off 33 new buses of the TNSTC which were purchased at a cost of ₹8.25 crore.
