About 3,600 metres of aluminium cable wires worth several lakh rupees was reportedly stolen by unidentified persons from a yard, at Palanisamy Nagar near Malumichampatty, a few days ago. The Chettipalayam Police registered a case under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and was investigating.

The cables belonged to a private company, which takes up contract work for Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation for laying underground cable in the district. The cables were reportedly stolen from 18 wooden drums that weighed about 1,300 kgs each.

Inquiries revealed that the 18 drums were among more than 150 drums with about 200 metres cable in each drum. The entire yard is fenced and has security guards, according to the police. However, a senior company official claimed that a portion of the fencing was damaged and that the cable could have been rolled out.

They said that the theft came to light when a labourer accidentally noticed one of the drums to be empty on June 1 and informed the supervisor. The drums without cables were said to be at random places.
