An environment activist D. Prabakaran, who was arrested by the police in Tirupur on the charge of hurling a petrol bomb at a sand lorry was released on bail on Saturday. He told reporters that there was threat to his life from the sand mafia. He said that the government should provide him protection. Prabakaran had obtained an order from Madras High Court prohibiting illegal sand mining from Aeripalayam stream and Pudupalayam tank in Tirupur. Claiming that the district administration did not act on the order, he visited the place and tried to stop the illegal mining. He said that he would go on a fast at the Anupparpalayam Police Station seeking justice, and to end the illegal mining.
