Action sought against hostel warden for making girls clean tank

The Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front on Monday petitioned the Tiruppur District Collector for action against a warden for allegedly making two girls clean an underground water storage tank at the hostel run by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department at Avinashi.

The petition, submitted by C. Nandagopal, Tiruppur district secretary of Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, said the warden, Hemamalini, made the girls, studying in classes X and XI, to clean the tank on July 30. A photo of the students cleaning the tank had gone viral in social media.

“As per details available with us, the students were forced to take leave and to clean the tank. The tank is around eight feet deep. While one student was made to get into the tank through the manhole and clean it, the other student stood outside and disposed of the sediment-mixed water. The children were forced to do a risky work that would have posed a threat to their lives,” said Mr. Nandagopal.

He alleged that the students were threatened by the hostel authorities and other officials not to prefer any complaint in this connection. “The students were forced to state that they took leave on July 30 as they were not well,” he alleged.
