Stink emanating from the heaps of dumped garbage in a corporation dustbin is creating uneasy and unhealthy atmosphere among the residents of Dr. Munuswamy Garden Layout, near Nehru Stadium.

This is not the only problem faced by over 30 residents in Ward 72.

Vehicles

Vehicles parked on the 12 feet narrow road disrupting the movement of vehicles, overflowing drainage channels, roads blocked by eateries, presence of stray dogs, as well as people urinating and defecating near the dustbin in an inebriated condition has turned the place into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

In addition, the place is of late harbouring anti-social elements who consume liquor in the open causing concern for residents over their safety.

A resident, B. Jinesh Jain said that restaurants, fruit stalls and eateries in the area throw garbage outside the dustbin making the place stink. Our continuous appeal to the Sanitary Inspector and Corporation officials did not yield any result.

“We continue to suffer, let the corporation place a dustbin in the commercial area and let the waste be dumped there,” adds Mr. Jain.

This will prevent the commercial waste i.e., eatery waste and fruit waste not spilling over to residential areas causing people much discomfort.

The residents alleged that the underground drainage pipeline broke often and the restaurants let out their sewage into it.

They added that the drainage pipe is meant for residents only as the restaurants and other shops should have an underground drainage connection.

But, the drainage from commercial premises are being let into a small pipe in the underground drainage pipeline meant for the residential areas thus causing inconvenience.

“We had enough for years, let the corporation remove the dustbin,” says Professor R. Govindarajalu, a resident in the area for the past 68 years.

He said that the dustbin was situated between a senior citizens park and a children's park and morning walkers suffer a lot. The dustbin has created a nauseating atmosphere, let it be removed, adds Mr. Govindarajalu.

Non vegetarian waste dumped outside the dustbins invite dogs and it has now become a resting place for stray dogs.

The residents said that cars were parked and repaired on the entrance of the road at a shop disrupting the flow of vehicles. The poorly maintained road is also a cause of worry for the residents.

Complaints

Councillor J. Sasirekha said that complaints were received from the residents for relocating the dustbin and efforts are on to shift it to an alternative place.
