Stones on railway track: IGP rules out sabotage

Analysis of last 6 incidents indicates mischief: Sivanandi

The police have stumbled upon vital clues/evidence about those placing boulders, stones and concrete bars on the railway track between Tirupur and Vijayamangalam and the offenders will be apprehended soon, Inspector General of Police — West Zone P. Sivanandi said on Wednesday.

He was talking to reporters here in the wake of fresh incident of huge stones being kept on the track in the section on Tuesday night and the Chennai – Coimbatore Intercity Express running into them. Mr. Sivanandi said that a close analysis of the last six incidents indicated that these were not acts sabotage but only mischief.

A 10-km stretch was proving vulnerable.

Vigil had been stepped on the Tirupur – Erode section. Special teams, comprising two Superintendents of Police, two Additional Superintendents of Police, five Deputy Superintendents of Police and 320 police personnel, had been deployed.

The police personnel were involved in open line patrolling and there was no lethargy on their part, Mr. Sivanandi said.

The miscreants were making use of the period between the first and second round of patrolling, especially in areas where there was inadequate lighting and open access to track.

The Railway Police on Wednesday took four persons into custody for questioning.
