Strict measures would be taken to ensure a safe and hygienic atmosphere in and around the city during the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held here next month, Tamil Nadu Health Minister M. R.K. Paneerselvam said Thursday.
He said Rs. 8 crore had been earmarked for health aspects for the conference beginning here on June 23.
Talking to reporters after holding discussions with the managements of leading hospitals here, Mr. Paneerselvam said a 50-bed ward would be set up in each hospital to meet any requirement of delegates.
Besides, a three-bed health centre would be set up inside the CODISSIA complex, the venue of the conference, and another five-bed centre outside it, for first aid, he said.
Stating that 20 ambulances, in addition to the existing ones under 108, would be available in and around the city for emergency, Mr. Paneerselvam said an helpline — 2211000 — with 20 lines, had also been created for emergency purpose.
On screening of visitors and delegates for major diseases, he said there was no necessity, particularly for H1N1 virus, as they would be coming after various tests.
A team of 20 food inspectors would be deployed to ensure supply of safe food for consumption in the entire city, Mr. Paneerselvam said.
