School teachers affiliated to Tamil Nadu Post-Graduate Teachers Association (TNPGTA) staged an agitation here on Tuesday evening to highlight their demands for better pay and social benefits.
Association district president P. Rangasamy said that the anomalies in the sixth pay commission recommendations should be rectified as quickly as possible and the post-graduate teachers should be given wages on a par with the scale given for college lecturers.
Besides, facilities availed by the Central Government employees like Leave Travel Allowance and maternity leave should be extended to the post-graduate teachers too.
The association also called for abolishment of the contributory pension scheme introduced in 2003.
The other major demands included a separate director to look after higher secondary section exclusively and posting of a minimum of 10 additional post-graduate teachers for every high school that got upgraded into a Higher Secondary School.
The agitators also criticised the government for providing insurance coverage to the employees through a private insurance company.
