A native of Tirunelvely who has served in various places including Jammu and Kashmir, Thanjavur and Perambalur, 34 year old S.Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar on Friday assumed charge as the 84th Superintendent of Police of the Nilgiris district. He succeeds Kapil Kumar C.Saratkar who has been posted as the Superintendent of Police,Coimbatore Rural.

Having served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Puduchery before joining the Indian Police Service in 2005 and becoming part of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, Mr.Kumar moved to Srinagar as an Assistant Superintendent of Police where he suffered a serious leg injury.

Speaking to the The Hindu, Mr.Kumar said that since this hill station is a popular vacation destination priority would be given to putting in place a permanent traffic management plan.

Importance would be given to ensuring smooth flow of traffic here.

Though it enjoys a reputation of being a crime free district the Nilgiris shares borders with Kerala and Karnataka. Hence focus would be on preventing smuggling of items like rice.
