The new bus terminal that is under construction on Mettupalayam Road will be ready by April 15 and the Coimbatore Corporation plans to request Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to open it, Commissioner Anshul Mishra told the Corporation Council on Thursday.
Mr. Mishra made this announcement when asked by Communist Party of India (Marxist) councillor C. Padmanabhan why an additional allocation of Rs.75 lakh was being made for the project. A resolution on this allocation was presented in the Council for its approval. The Commissioner also explained that more allocation was being made because the initial plan did not include an elevator and other modern facilities.
Parking lot
The councillors wanted the Corporation to construct soon a multi-tier parking lot. The Corporation was planning one with hydraulic equipment that could place cars and jeeps on slots marked for the vehicles.
Mayor R. Venkatachalam said the proposal for the lot had been sent to the State Government for its approval. The councillors said that the project should at least be launched before the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held here in June.
Tamil conference
The Corporation also planned to provide facilities such as water supply lines and toilets at the conference venue (CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex) and surrounding areas at Rs.7 crore.
Some existing facilities such as toilets would also be improved under this initiative.
A resolution placed in the Council said 26 public toilets in various parts of the city would be improved at Rs.87 lakh and toilets in schools would be improved at near Rs.51 lakh.
As many as 60 mobile toilets would be provided at the conference venue and along rally routes at Rs.3.46 crore.
Water supply lines would be laid at the conference venue and surrounding areas at Rs.90 lakh.
To ensure hygiene, 315 workers would be appointed on a temporary basis for 15 days. The sum earmarked for wages was Rs.35 lakh.
Repairs and improvements to marriage halls and community centres run by the Corporation would be carried out at Rs.94 lakh.
