The need to include the Moundadan Chettis in the list of tribes was emphasised at the 10th annual general meeting of the Moundadan Chetty Community Association held in Gudalur on Monday.
The Moundadan Chettis have been residing in Srimadurai, Paadanthorai, Mudumalai, Nillakotai and their surroundings for long. At present most of them are cultivators.
Beneficiaries
The meeting urged the government to make them beneficiaries of the Scheduled Tribes and other Forest Dwellers Act.
By another resolution they wanted representation for their community on the Board of trustees of temples of Lord Vettakorumanswamy of Nambolakottai and Manguzhi Bhagavathi Amman.
They pointed out that they were the presiding deities of the community.
Requesting the government to earmark special wards in government hospitals for treating persons suffering from sickle cell anemia, they said that free medical assistance should be extended to them in the Aadivasi hospital in Gudalur.
The government should consider establishing the proposed medical college in Gudalur.
