In a bid to help poor children affected by cancer, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research here has come forward to provide follow up treatment free of cost.

As a first activity for running and expanding this free service to the cancer hit poor population, the institute today released Rs. 500 worth T-shirts for sale to meet and support the free treatment, Dr. P. Guhan, Director of institute said.

The institute announced a project called ‘join hands’, which called upon people to extend helping hands in running and expanding the free service, by buying the T-shirts being sold across the district.

The institute had cured 116 children of cancer since 2005 with the help of donations made by a few philanthropists, he said. But, each child had to receive treatment for over 18 months, with the cost ranging from Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh, Dr. Guhan claimed.

Since the donations were not sufficient to support the increasing demands of more and more incoming patients, the institute ventured into a novel concept of raising funds through the T-shirt sales.
