The City Police on Wednesday evening granted permission to Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnasamy for conducting the World Tamil Protection Conference on VOC Park Grounds on February 6 and 7. The permission has been granted with a set of conditions.
Mr. Krishnasamy had applied for permission on October 22, 2009 and followed it up with a reminder on December 22. On January 6, he moved the Madras High Court seeking directions to the police for grant of permission for the conference.
The city police on January 19 served a notice on Dr. Krishnasamy stating that permission was not being granted since there could be speeches in favour of banned outfit/organisation at the conference causing breach of public peace and tranquillity.
On January 30, Justice K. Venkataraman of the High Court issued a direction stating that the petitioner could meet the Deputy Commissioner of Police, P. Nagarajan, on February 1 and present documents supporting the reasons for seeking permission.
The police were asked to take a decision and pass orders by February 3.
On February 1, Dr. Krishnasamy met the DCP and Commissioner of Police, P. Sivanandi, and explained that the objective of the conference was to create a secretariat for protecting the Tamil race and not support or promote any organisation.
The police have stressed that there should not be any speeches in support of banned organisations and any of the conference events should not result in breach of public peace and tranquillity.
