About 150 students worked for more than five hours on Sunday to roll out a flower carpet hailing Coimbatore.

Students from several colleges in the city used a lakh marigold flowers to form “Coimbatore Vazhgha” in Tamil on the basketball court (100 feet by 50 feet) at R.K. Sree Rangammal Kalvi Nilayam Higher Secondary School.

A 12-member group from Puliakulam played the folk drums to launch the third edition of Coimbatore Vizha, organised by the Coimbatore Chapter of the Young Indians (Yi). Nearly 700 kg of marigold flowers were used.

The week-long celebrations will have about 70 events organised by more than 60 organisations. Six of these events were held on Sunday. This included health camps and a talk by the Humour Society. The Vizha aims at celebrating the spirit of Coimbatore, according to the organisers.

On January 3, some of the programmes planned are exhibitions, contests, cricket match, health camp, workshop and feeding the needy.
