New Year celebrations in the city set a new trend this year with no fatal accidents reported during the celebrations.

Though the police had made extensive arrangements to curb drunk driving, overspeeding, and drag race since Saturday evening to early hours of Sunday, around 20 minor accidents were reported. More than 10 people were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for minor injuries they had sustained in separate such incidents reported in the district.

The police said that no major cases related to road accidents were reported during New Year revelry.

“No major major accidents were reported on Saturday night and post-midnight. The arrangements made by the police had good result,” said city police commissioner A. Amalraj.

More than 900 people caught for various traffic violations were made to sit at shamianas erected by police on main roads.

GVK EMRI’s Programme Manager for Coimbatore V. Muthukrishnan said that its fleet of ambulances, which included 27 vehicles, did not attend any serious accident cases from Saturday evening.

Political parties, community organisations, NGOs, clubs and residents associations across the city organised events in their respective localities to welcome New Year.

Special prayers were held at temples and churches to mark the end of 2016 and to welcome New Year.
