Celebrations sans road traffic accidents marked New Year celebrations in the city this day. People took part in the celebrations hosted at places ranging from street light-lit lanes to dim-lit party halls of star hotels.

Revellers shared the joy of New Year as they moved on arterial stretches like Avinashi Road, Trichy Road, Sathy Road and gathered at busy spots such as R.S. Puram, Race Course, Anna Salai, Ramanathapuram, Nehru Stadium, Laskhmi Mills, Peelamedu and Airport junction.

Unlike previous years, traffic offences related to New Year revelry were under check with the police making extensive precautionary measures starting from Wednesday. Thanks to city police who set up 22 check posts on busy spots that made revellers celebrate responsibly.

Over speeding on main stretches was controlled by placing barricades at frequent intervals.

Surprise awaited for even those caught for drunk driving and over speeding as police who were on duty throughout the night distributed them cakes. Police had erected shamianas at 24 places where those violated traffic rules were made to sit and given cakes.

While the police had distributed over 10,000 greeting card-cum-advisory to motorists from Wednesday, pamphlets on safe driving on New Year night were distributed to the public at main signals on Saturday.

Online taxi operators in association with bar attached hotels ensured that their customers returned home safely after late night parties. Coimbatore Medical College Hospital received zero cases of road traffic accident.
