In a bid to help police personnel in the Nilgiris district improve the quality of their lives, a training programme was organised here on Friday. It was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police, the Nilgiris, Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar.
Later speaking to newspersons, he said that such a programme was being organised for the first time in the district and it was a local initiative.
Listing the objectives, he said that it was to help the beneficiaries focus more on their health, fight obesity and keep at bay lifestyle maladies like diabetes.
It was also to teach the police personnel how to manage stress effectively and experience the benefits of spiritualism. It would in course if time lead to overall personality development.
Lamenting that alcoholism was a source of major concern, Mr. Saratkar said that it seriously affected not only the individuals concerned but also their families and the society they were part of.
With the help of members of the Alcoholics Anonymous, the police personnel were being made aware of the consequences of becoming slaves to the bottle.
Pointing out that the exercise was also being used to test the IQ and General Knowledge of the personnel, he said that rewards would be given. To a query, he said that the total number of police personnel in the district was 1000.
About 200 home guards and around 40 traffic wardens would also benefit.
