The operation of kangaroo courts (katta panchayat) in the district would be curbed by the police with the help of the Village Vigilance Committees, said R. Sudhakar, Superintendent of Police, here on Monday.
He told reporters that the inspectors of police had been instructed to visit every village in their jurisdiction to study the ground realities and chalk out a scheme to eradicate the system through discussions with the elders in the villages.
Referring to the family of M. Palaniammal of Odasalpatti Pudur, near Dharmapuri, who were ostracised by the villagers, Mr. Sudhakar said the police had not received any complaint from her.
In a similar case concerning 15 migrant Dalit families in Kadagathur by the native Dalits, two DSPs were deputed to assess the situation and the case was referred to the RDO under Section 107 of IPC, Mr. Sudhakar said.
The district police had decided to hold a meeting in Kadagathur Dalit Colony soon.
Mr. Sudhakar said that the district police had registered 131 cases of poll code violations. In 29 cases, the violators were fined. Charge sheets were filed in 61 cases and 14 cases were dismissed.
Over Rs. 1 crore unaccounted money was seized from the public during the election process when the Model Code of Conduct was in operation.
After the completion of the election process, check posts would be established on the borders of the district to prevent goods carriers from transporting people, he added.
