70% of temple lands encroached, says Thiruthondargal Sabai

As much as 70% of lands belonging to temples across the State are encroached upon, A. Radhakrishnan, founder and president of Thiruthondargal Sabai, said here on Tuesday. The land owned by the Narasimhar Temple here was resurveyed by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments officials here on Tuesday and Mr. Radhakrishnan who was here to see it said, “According to documents, 65 cents of land have been registered in the name of the temple. In the survey, we found that 484 sq.ft. of land belonging to the temple has been encroached upon, close to the Anjaneya temple here. A report in this regard would be submitted in the High Court.” Mr. Radhakrishnan said that though the Commissioner of HR and CE had issued a circular to put up a circular on land owned by temples, most of the temples were yet to act on this regard. He added that there were over 1.5 lakh acres of temple poramboke land across the State and there would be several acres of land that would be originally belonging to various temple trusts.
