A private bus carrying 45 passengers, including 10 children and 15 women, from Gandhipuram to Kovaipudur got stuck in the subway at Lanka Corner on Saturday due to waterlogging.

The passengers, who were trapped inside the bus, were rescued by fire and rescue services personnel. The Station Fire Officer of Coimbatore South Fire Station, P. Annadurai, said that the incident took place around 4.30 a.m. when the bus was proceeding towards Kovaipudur.

It is learnt that passengers asked the bus driver Feroz Khan not to take risk as the subway was flooded.

But the driver went ahead and the bus got stuck in the middle of the subway.

A team of 10 fire and rescue services rescue personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the commuters. The bus was later towed away from the subway.

Traffic police warned the bus crew not to put the safety of commuters at risk. The subway was blocked with barricades till the water was drained.

Subways at Avanashi Road Flyover and Coimbatore North Flyover were also flooded due to the heavy rain.

A couple of trees were also uprooted. Around 10 p.m. on Friday a tree fell near the Omni Bus Stand at Gandhipuram and was cleared in about 45 minutes. In the early hours of Saturday a tree fell across East Club Road.
