As many as 25 candidates, including 14 independents, will contest in the Lok Sabha elections in Coimbatore constituency.
District Election Officer and Coimbatore District Collector Archana Patnaik has said in a press release that on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers on Wednesday, there were no withdrawals here.
In Pollachi constituency, one independent withdrew the nomination paper and there will be 18 candidates, including one woman, in the fray.
In Pollachi, 12 candidates are independents.
The second phase of training for polling booth officials will be held on April 15.
Coimbatore district has 26,19,323 voters. The district has 4,540 ballot units and 3,009 control units of electronic voting machines.
The shortage of ballot units will be met from other districts.
In Coimbatore, six candidates are from recognised national and State-level parties and in Pollachi, six are from such major parties.
With the polling scheduled for April 24, the candidates have stepped up their campaign, rolling out various promises that include long-pending development issues in both constituencies.
While DMK President M. Karunanidhi, AIADMK General Secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, and DMDK founder Vijayakanth have already campaigned for their candidates in both the constituencies, the Bharatiya Janata Party is awaiting confirmation whether its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would address an election meeting in the city. The Congress too is waiting for a similar confirmation on the visit of either its President Sonia Gandhi or Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.
Staff Reporter adds from Tirupur: After the stipulated period given for withdrawal of nominations, a total of 26 candidates remained in the fray in Tirupur Lok Sabha constituency.
Just one Independent candidate, K.C. Kumarasamy, from among the 27 candidates whose nomination papers that got cleared, withdrew the nomination on Wednesday.
The election officials also allocated the symbols for the 26 candidates in the contest.
