City Police Commissioner P. Nagarajan told The Hindu that the police would install 250 cameras across the city.

“We have sent a proposal to the State Government seeking financial assistance from ‘Nirbhaya fund’ for the purpose of women’s safety,” he said.

He was here to attend a function organised by the police on Friday.

The cameras will be set up near colleges and schools, places of worship, commercial areas, and key areas where women would generally fear to commute alone.

Mr. Nagarajan inaugurated two initiatives of the police which included cashless collection of fines for violations of motor vehicle rules, and a modern control room set up at the City Police Commissioner’s office.

The SBI handed over 14 point of sale (POS) machines to the police to collect fines.

“The fines thus collected will be transferred to an account in SBI and later to the treasury,” said SBI Assistant General Manager M.J. Selvakumar.

As part of the modern control room, the police have set up 47 cameras in the city using the police modernisation funds.
