A 16-year-old boy of Selvapuram in the city was arrested by the Aliyar Police on Thursday for allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old girl on her neck at a park near Aliyar Dam on Wednesday.

The police said that the boy and the girl were neighbours.

Inquiry revealed that the boy lost his father and lived with his mother and sisters near the house of the girl. Studying Plus-One at a private school in Race Course, he was said to be in love with a girl doing her first year B.Sc. Biotechnology in a private college.

On Wednesday morning after the girl was dropped at the college by her mother, the two went to Aliyar dam.

The boy is said to have stabbed the girl on her neck four times and fled from the spot.

A group of devotees heading to Sabarimala saw the girl lying along the bushes.

The girl was rushed to the Pollachi Government Hospital and was referred to a private hospital in the city. The girl’s condition is stable.

On Thursday morning, Selvapuram police found the boy roaming in the market area and arrested him.

He was booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and was lodged in the observation home in the city.

This is the second such incident that has happened in the district in less than 10 days.

In the late hours of December 30 a spurned lover stabbed a 17-year-old (his neighbour) girl in Sulur on the outskirts of the city.

The girl who was hospitalised died the next day.
