Leaders commemorate Czechoslovakia's centenary in Paris
Leaders of France, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have met in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the Czechoslovakia military, which prompted the country’s independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 30, 1918, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was collapsing, France became the first country to formally recognize Czechoslovakia’s new government, paving the way to the country’s proclamation of independence later that year.
Spanish rescue boat saves 60 migrants
A Spanish rescue boat has saved 60 migrants in the sea near Libya, prompting Italy to immediately say it’ll deny the boat permission to dock in Italy. An AP journalist aboard a nearby vessel says the Open Arms aid boat spotted a rubber dinghy with 60 people aboard in international waters, 30 nautical miles from Libya’s coast on Saturday.
Two Palestinians killed in Gaza border protests
The 13-year-old was fatally shot in the head and a 24-year-old man died of gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen on Friday, Gaza's Health Ministry said, as weekly border rallies organised by the Islamic militant group Hamas that rules the territory continued.

All-party meet on Cauvery
Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has convened an all-party meeting in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to discuss the steps to be taken by the State on the Cauvery issue. Karnataka is yet to nominate its members for the Cauvery Water Management Authority. It is also contemplating the idea of seeking legal remedy to oppose guidelines drawn up by the Centre in formulating the Authority and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
Water situation in Chennai not 'alarming'
Thanks to the recent rain in Chennai and its suburbs, the groundwater table and rain-fed reservoirs saw a marginal improvement. Strongly disagreeing with Niti Aayog’s recent statement that Chennai would be among 21 cities in the country that would run out of groundwater by 2020, Santha Sheela Nair, a former civil servant, says that the situation is not as alarming as it is made out to be, if one is to go by the groundwater numbers of the city for the past 15 years. However, the Niti Aayog’s statement should be taken as a “wake-up call” as one cannot remain complacent, she says.
