Senior NCP leader P.A. Sangma has said it is unfortunate that a democratic country like India does not have a prime minister from the Lok Sabha whose members are directly elected by the people.
Addressing a state level convention of the party in Goa last evening, Sangma said, “I am a strong believer of the parliamentary system of government, but in the last 15 years, I have been a very disappointed man. Till now, Lok Sabha failed to produce a prime minister.”
“In 1996 elections, we had to borrow a chief minister from the state of Karnataka (H D Deve Gowda) for the prime ministerial post. In 2009 again, the Lok Sabha failed to find a prime minister which forced the country to choose premier (Manmohan Singh) from the Rajya Sabha,” he said.
“I firmly believe that in parliamentary system, a country must elect its prime minister from the Lower House,” Sangma said.
