The administration has imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of the IPC in the entire district, as violence broke out in the city during the anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday.

At least two were killed in police firing and 13 injured.

Roads bolcked

Protesters blocked roads at various points, set tyres on fire, and hurled stones on passersby and the police.

Union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay was arrested during the protest against the encroachment drive, and sent to a camp jail.

On the directive of the Jharkhand High Court, the district administration began to remove encroachments in Islamnagar and Alinagar.

In the last two weeks, more than 3,000 shops, houses and other illegal buildings have either been demolished or sealed.

Locals criticised the police firing. “Police could have used tear gas or other methods to control the protesters.” There were reports of clashes between police and protesters in many areas in the city.
