Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday greeted the Hindu community of Pakistan on the eve of Holi and promised to safeguard and protect the rights of minorities.
In his Holi message, Mr Sharif said that all communities are entitled to equal rights and privileges in Pakistan.
He said it has always been one of the cardinal principles of his government to safeguard and protect the rights of minorities as the government’s policies were geared towards creating greater harmony and cohesion among people of all faiths.
Mr. Sharif said Pakistan’s social and cultural fabrics are strongly influenced by the individual narratives of its people belonging to all backgrounds, cultures, customs and religions.
“This diversity is of great value and reinforces our ties with the region and the world around us,” he said.
There are around eight million Hindus in the country of 180 million. Most of the Hindus reside in southern province of Sindh. There had been several reports of violence against the minority community last year.
The premier termed Holi a colourful occasion symbolising verve and energy of life celebrated by the Hindu community.
He said the spectacular festival is aimed at reviving the selfless spirit of camaraderie between people of all shades of belief and practice.
Mr. Sharif said Holi reflects the strength of the spirit of goodness over forces of evil, and provides the minority community an occasion to reconnect with other faiths to bring harmony in the society.
He lauded the contribution of the Hindu community in tirelessly working for the success of the country.
Mr. Sharif expressed confidence that the Hindu community would continue to play their role for peace, progress and prosperity of Pakistan with complete dedication.
