MPs' panel visits Tarapur, Bhabha facilities

The Parliamentary Standing Committee deliberating the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, 2010, led by its chairman T. Subbarami Reddy, visited the Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) facilities in Maharashtra on Tuesday.

The Committee reviewed the nuclear safety, personnel and environmental safety, emergency preparedness and safety provisions at these Tarapur facilities.

Srikumar Banerjee, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, and S.K. Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), accompanied the Committee and provided its members with inputs on the subject and replied to their questions.

An NPCIL press release said the Committee took note of the safety measures and expressed satisfaction. It will visit the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam on Wednesday.
