Residents of Daman and Diu, who own vehicles older than 15 years, will have to pay an environment cess, besides the new one-time tax proposed by the Centre.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the promulgation of the Daman and Diu Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Regulation, 2010, providing for a one-time motor vehicle tax on personalised non-transport vehicles and increasing the rate of taxation on transport vehicles, in line with the neighbouring States such as Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The Act proposes an environment cess and green tax on old vehicles, in addition to the tax to be paid at the time of renewal of registration.

Viewed as a resources mobilisation measure, the initiative is expected to increase the annual revenue collection to Rs.2.21 crore.
