What’s making news in sports shoes

After the dad-bod, here’s another father figure that’s making news in the sports-shoe space

I remember when I was just a tot, my father would take me to the park, and what I remember most vividly is how, right after coming home from work, he would simply change his shoes and lead me out. It made for like quite a contrasted look, formal shirt and pleated (baggy) trousers teamed up with white sneakers with chunky soles that curled and curved around the midsole in an 80s imagined attempt at futurism.

Not long after, they were relegated to retro. But now, in 2018, the doors have swung open and these new interpretations look clunky, boast a wide footprint, and often employ crazy colour-blocking schemes. Here are the chief proponents of the ‘dad silhouette’.

Puma Thunder Spectra

The shoe is special because it is the first sneaker that released simultaneously in India as worldwide, thus showing the world that we too know urban chic. The red and yellow colour-way is the first with four others being rolled out gradually. The layered mid- and outer sole make for a rich, even if bulky, look.

Reebok DMX Run 10 IICE

A game-changer when released nearly two decades ago. The uppers are a lot more sober than the others on the list and it also has some good functional cred (great for runs, am told) apart from the cool looks.

ASICS TIGER X Foss Gel-Mai ‘Development Sunrise’

This new anniversary special silhouette boldly deploys colourblocking on a classic ASICS TIGER silhouette, which has always been the chunky lifestyle sneaker. The orange sunrise hue with the grey (shadowy) bits, all in suede, makes for a pretty conspicuous calling card. Well, it works, and since it is only available through a few select channels, the rarity quotient too is preserved.
