Thin is not in

SMART BUSINESS MODEL Katherine is a model, runs a sports business and has acted too.

Just like Gisele Bundchen, who is one of her inspirations, Katherine Brown was also spotted by two modelling agencies from London, Storm and Premier.

Standing 5 feet, 11inches tall, propelled a few inches higher by black shoes, in a green dress ending above her knees, Katherine looks every inch a model.

She moved to London and became a full-time model by the time she was 16. Originally from Glasgow, she was crowned Miss Scotland in 2009 and Miss UK in 2010. She has also competed in the Miss World Pageant, finishing in the top 10 in “Model and Talent”.

“I entered the pageant because some of my friends told me to apply. In the Miss World Competition, I met girls from so many different countries and cultures and I learnt so much. I realised that all of us shared so much in common in terms of what we want to do. I also got along really well with Miss India. She was great.”

Katherine was here for the Signature World of Eight fashion tour where designers from eight fashion capitals — Sydney, Sao Paulo, NYC, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Mumbai and London showcased their creations.

They were be accompanied by eight Indian designers in eight cities. Katherine was the showstopper in Bangalore. She wore the creations of London-based designer Christian Blanken.

“I have always wanted to come to India because I have grown up on Indian food in Glasgow. I even danced to a Bollywood song, ‘Kajra Re', in the Miss World pageant. I just love Indians. They are so polite, welcoming, smart and well-dressed. Though I've not spent too much time here, I think Indian fashion is great with its attention to detail, bold and beautiful colours.”

In March 2010, she was appointed the Sports Ambassador of Scotland, to promote sports among teenage girls. “I also own a sport company, Street Sport Scotland Ltd. We create portable sports arenas. My company will be working along with the government in the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In fact, my immediate plan is to launch my company.”

Katherine has also dappled with cinema, having done a three-month course in the New York Film Academy. She has done a few small roles in TV productions like “Trial and Retribution” and films like “Fast Romance”.

“I would love to act in a Bollywood film, with all its dancing. I'm hoping to be in touch with a few filmmakers here,” says Katherine, adding that she would continue modelling around the world and in India.

Katherine is not anorexic, rather she is a healthy pink. And she works to keep it that way. “I think a model needs to really take care of herself. She needs to stay healthy, physically and mentally, drink loads of water and exercise well.”

She feels strongly about anorexic models. “Look at models like Gisele Bundchen, Lara Stone, Elle MacPherson. They are full of confidence and they have curves. Thin is not going to last long, toned and curvy is,” says Katherine, who looks up to “the industry . I find that everyone is passionate about it,” she ends with a flourish.
