He's been in the country for almost six years now and says he looks forward to making India his home. Meet Gilles Verniers, a Belgium native who first set foot in India in his school days. “Well, the day I landed here was Independence Day in 1997. I did my 12th standard in Anand, Gujarat. I later went back to Belgium but only to come here again.”

Opportunities galore

So, what brought him back? “I think it was the sense of freedom and opportunity that I experienced over here. People were welcoming and overall, it was very stimulating, which made me come back in 2005,” says the 31-year-old, now settled in New Delhi. Ask him was if it was difficult to adapt to an altogether different culture and Giles happily recalls an incident in Gujarat. “I was once travelling from Vadodara to Ahmedabad in a bus when people sitting behind me started discussing in Gujarati whether I am a foreigner or not, only to conclude later that I might be a Kashmiri.”

He concludes, “So in that aspect I was lucky, I became a part of India and somehow I got assimilated in its culture in no time.” Gilles is now married to a Bengali girl. “I can even speak in Gujarati, Bengali and Hindi,” he adds.

Having made Indian culture his own, Giles can't be too far from Indian food. “I just love spicy food, I enjoy having Indian dishes. In fact I can even cook dal chawal, rajma, chicken, etc,” he says.

PhD on Samajwadi Party

He is at present pursuing a PhD on “Construction and Institutionalisation of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh”. His little daughter “will be educated in India,” he says determinedly.

“In the years to come, I might take up some assignment here or in some other country, but at the end of it, this is my home,” Giles signs off, but not before expressing a hearty ‘shukriya'.
