Amit Aggarwal’s opening act at India Couture Week 2019

India Couture Week kicked off on July 22 with Amit Aggarwal’s first Indian bridal line

Delhi-based designer Amit Aggarwal highlighted the sustainable bride in his first Indian bridal line at India Couture Week last night. The opening act for the 12th edition of the show, his collection — titled Lumen — drew from his signature sculptural looks and draped forms, and showcased outfits embroidered with recycled polymers, including the one worn by showstopper Kiara Advani.

Inspired by virtual reality experience at the Saatchi Gallery, London, called ‘We Live In An Ocean Of Air’, the clothes are a reflection of “human and plant anatomy” says the designer. He goes beyond the usual lehenga-choli combinations, incorporating chevron patterns, ruffles and drapes, as well as 3D hand embroideries. There’s also a smattering of menswear in the collection, including sherwanis and jackets. Aggarwal has used gossamer tulle lace and organzas rendered with structural frameworks to give the fabric a unique visual and tactile quality. Handwoven traditional textiles were created in collaboration with Taani by Tanira Sethi.

While the collection is predominantly jewel coloured — emerald, petrol, purple and plum — neutrals like gold, blush, silver and ivory, as well as neon tones make their presence felt. The showstopper lehenga is also a bold shade of red that Aggarwal has never used before. Models sported bridal jewellery by Narayan Jewellers by Ketan and Jatin Chokshi, with footwear designed by Dyuti Bansal.

India Couture Week, organised by the Fashion Design Council of India, is on till July 28, and closes with Tarun Tahiliani’s show.
