Spaces: Kanjerla Laxminarayana Yadav Park — sweet alcove in the city

The sprawling, tree-filled lawns at Kanjerla Laxminarayana Yadav Park are a favourite date destination for Hyderabadis

The entrance of Kanjerla Laxminarayana Yadav Park, more commonly known as KLN Yadav Park or B K Guda Park, is large and unmissable as you drive through Sanathnagar. For just ₹5, visitors can easily spend hours lounging under the sun in the lush greenery.

Named after a former Minister Government of Andhra Pradesh, of whom a statue is erected, KLN Yadav Park has been around for a multitude of generations and is, to the pleasure of many, kept immaculate by the GHMC. Be it the clusters of cycas trees and the pondside bamboo trees, the park is a vegetation wonder. And as a pretty contrast to the green are the terracotta brick pathways that run through the expanse.

Apart from a long-disused cafeteria spot that still promises ice creams and fresh juices as well as a few broken swing sets, the park’s facilities such as a couple of playground structures and shaded gazebos are in full swing. One can imagine the two gazebos that overlook the large pond bring in quite a few picnic parties, be it rainy season or otherwise.

On a rainy day, it’s easy to imagine the park still attracting visitors who nestle under the thick coverage of the trees or kids who get a little monsoon-happy. There’s a universal ambience of good vibes mixed with escapism at KLN Yadav Park.

A getaway

A woman passing through says the park has been an inter-generational favourite for her and her family, explaining some of her most vivid childhood moments have occurred at this park. Now having moved away from the area, she explains the park has remained well-maintained over the years as she hoped.

A man saunters up to us and says, “I’ve visited this park four or five times a year and I’ve never seen it empty; people walking in the mornings and evenings and also youngsters in the afternoon. Sadly I see a lot of young people who have obviously told their parents they’re at school but come here for a little afternoon getaway.”

And it’s true, there are quite a few, so to speak, couples who come here for some quality time as well as those flying solo for a little away-from-the-city time with a book or laptop. Despite the audible traffic nearby and human chatter, the park is a nice private chill-spot if you need a few moments to yourself.
