Up the style quotient

Oversized artwork, statement rugs and quirky artefacts. Teja Lele Desai on how to give your home that special touch

Who doesn’t want their home to look expensively elegant? What if you could do that without busting the bank? It’s possible. We tell you how:

1 Rethink your

nameplate

The same-old, same-old doesn’t have to begin at the doorstep? Ideate and come up with an unusual idea for your nameplate. People will know someone unusual lives in there.

2 Show your front door some love

Who says the front door has to be a basic brown or black? A bright and standout door is the easiest way to glam up your entryway. Opt for red, indigo or yellow! Or the palest pink..

3 Make a great first

impression

Flank the front door with tall planters to create an impact. A smart nameplate on the wall and metal numbers on the door add the finishing touch.

4 Highlight that neglected ceiling

Often the most neglected part of a home, the ceiling can also add to your décor. Paint it a vibrant colour to add vibrancy. Or add fake wooden rafters for a rustic look.

5 Supersize your

artwork

Forget about framing loads of pictures or prints. Just get an oversized artwork — it could be a print, poster or painting — and let it take centre stage in a room.

6 Bring home a great rug

With rugs available at rock-bottom prices, you may think twice about splurging on a Kashmiri silk carpet or a handwoven indigenous dhurrie. But the right rug can complete make over a room.

7 Style the bookcase

Gone are the days when a bookcase was meant to hold only books. Remove a few books here and there, and replace with a sculptural piece, a photo frame or a small planter to create interest.

8 Paint your interior

doors

Painting your interior doors a colour like grey, black, charcoal or navy can lend your rooms a really expensive look.

9 Hang a chandelier in the kitchen

Add a glam touch to the heart of your home by suspending a glitzy chandelier. This unexpected touch of lavishness will make your kitchen drool-worthy.

10 Showcase some

mirrors

Mirrors can maximise light and space by altering perspectives. Use mirrors, be it a large single frame or multiple ones, to create an impact.

11 Frame the bathroom mirror

Most bathrooms have just a sheet of glass that adheres to the wall. Give the mirror some spunk by adding a classic wooden frame.

12 Focus on make-under, not makeover

All expensive homes usually have a minimalistic vibe. So de-clutter on a regular basis and edit your tables, bookcases and other spaces regularly.
