Starting this Saturday, Bengaluru will witness four design mascot Nano cars running through several areas for nearly two weeks with professionals reaching out to people for spreading design awareness.

Organised by the Institute of Indian Interior Designers – Bengaluru Regional Chapter (IIID-BRC), the Nano drives would consist of green design and messages that would kindle thoughts in people to address public spaces. The cars, that would be arriving with designers from Kochi, would be flagged off from UB City for the inauguration of the Karnataka leg of the national Design Yatra 2016 that began in February this year. Moving from one city to another, the Nano Car Design Yatra will move on to Mangaluru, Manipal and Goa from November 24.

From talking to people regarding public spaces to maintaining them, from reading public art to designing vantage points in the city, from road maintenance to design of public buildings, Bangalureans will have experts addressing them in public in the awareness drives.

“It’s always healthier to have such awareness programmes often so that one grows thinking about public spaces,” says urban architect Naresh Narasimhan, part of IIID, who would be one of the panellists taking part in the discussions.

“From panel discussions with eminent architects and citizens at the Rangoli on M.G. Road Boulevard, debatable topics in the spheres of design, architecture, aesthetics and urban landscaping, heritage walks across the city, to a series of student competitions for various social initiatives, the IIID-BRC’s Design Yatra has a lot planned,” said Shyamala Prabhu, Convener, Design Yatra 2016.

Central to this leg of the Yatra is the attention to three design-based social interventions by the Indian Institute of Interior Designers. “This is an event where we seek to ignite the minds of masses to think in terms of design, function and aesthetics, even as we want the youngsters to get passionately involved in reflecting one’s thought on public spaces and bring in social intervention through design,” added Ms. Prabhu.

The Design Yatra’s social initiatives will include a gathering of funds for refurbishment of a government school / shelter for boys at Siddapura and building a community centre in slums to socialise in.

“Heritage walks will cover predominant p laces such as MG Road and Cubbon Park, Bhoganandeeshwara Temple (Nandi Hills) and Heritage Village (Manipal),” says Gayathri Shetty, Chairperson, IIID-BRC.
