The monsoon seems finally done as is Diwali officially signalling the start of winter or we can be posh and say fall. You can finally feel the nip in the air, the days are getting shorter and it is time for a dramatic wardrobe change.

In anticipation of colder months ahead, here are some guidelines you could do with from the fashion fraternity.

According to stylist and fashion blogger, Pranita Mehta, “It is time to bring out the good old checks from the ‘70s trunk.

Let us play with mid-length hemlines and put on some wide belts that tighten the waist. Vintage couch and wallpaper florals are in. Something offbeat is the recent following for political statements on apparel. Deconstructed silhouettes and voluminous suiting is new. We have a good mix of feminine and masculine ideas to stay fashionable this season. ”

Naina Ruhail, a professional makeup artist and blogger, says, “Winter florals, neutral plaids, bright colours and political slogans are going to be big this season. Making a comeback this Fall are polka dots and overalls. It is however, time to bid adieu to fishnets.”

“Victorian inspired collars will be seen on shirts and dresses. We will be steering away from athleisure and embracing leisure suits instead. Borrowing from the men, we will see women wear oversized blazers. Buttoned-up gowns, dresses, skirts, and jackets, will be a thing. Sheer layering is a trend worth trying. Denims, head to toe, is another look that might be interesting to experiment with this season,” states Karuna Rampal, a freelance designer.

As far as the colour palette, don’t be afraid to go beyond the usual choices. “Enriched burgundy, power red, and copious amounts of gold and silver are going to set the mood for Fall,” Pranita forecasts, adding, “Look for velvet, shearling and plaids embellished with feathers, studs, and shiny crystals.” “Feather details on clothing and accessories can be expected and will be popular, as will metallic accents. Pale pink will be a fun shade to don this season,” Karuna says. While it’s important to know what the top trends of the season are, there’s no discounting that it all boils down to styling.

Naina suggests you “pair your Fall outfits with wide waist belts, sock boots, vintage hats, and neck scarves,” while Pranita recommends you “throw on a trench coat over a pair of basic jeans and a tee to stand out. Use enough gold in makeup when you dress up in dark clothes and use bold saturated red when you dress up in metallics. Shiny calf-length boots are going to steal the show.
