Remembering the ‘Grandpa’ YouTuber who won hearts worldwide

On October 27, a beloved grandfather who loved feeding little children, passed away in his Telangana home. When the news reached the Internet three days later, condolences began pouring in from around the world — the US, Israel, Trinidad and Tobago — with people calling him “Grandpa” and describing how his cooking warmed their hearts. Those who probably miss him the most, however, are not likely to pour their grief out on social media. These are the numerous orphaned children regularly treated to handcooked meals by Narayana Reddy, the late protagonist of YouTube channel Grandpa Kitchen.

Set up by his son Shrikant Reddy, the channel has been documenting Grandpa’s large scale, heartfelt, kitchen-free cooking for a little over two years. From mutton leg biryani to veggie burgers to a gigantic fudgie brownie, everything Grandpa has cooked so far has been in open air, surrounded by trees and fresh green grass, in iron vessels atop wood fires.

It is the sheer scale of his cooking that draws in viewers by the million, and his crinkly-eyed affection coupled with the term that keeps them returning loyally. His last video, one of white sauce macaroni pasta posted on October 26, has garnered over four lakh views. Most of his videos cross that mark within a week.

However, the love Grandpa garnered was not just because of his videos’ mouth-watering culinary visuals, or his oft-quoted refrain “loving, caring, sharing... this is my family”. The Patreon page linked to his YouTube channel drew in donations from his fans around the globe, and was used to buy schoolbooks, uniforms and other needs for the children.

Amid the stream of love and condolence, many well-wishers expressed their confidence that his son would continue the father’s work. They also expressed their unwavering support for said work, and their hope that the channel, the recipes, and Grandpa’s legacy will live on.
