There is sushi and then there are foods that are sold as sushi in Hyderabad. So, when I learnt Hashi's proprietors were not from the hotel industry my inquisitive was at its peak. It is a different thing to love to eat a dish the way it should be eaten but it’s a totally different thing to be able to run a restaurant that serves the food you enjoy the most. Nishita Mehda and Sandeep Balasubramanian’s love affair with their travel and the food they savour during their travels thrives through Hashi.
During once such trip, they were thoroughly excited about the food they ate and that had them playfully put forward a proposition to themselves. 'Can we do something like this?' That, the couple says was the foundation for Hashi. The Japanese word hashi translates to chopsticks and only serves food that is easy to eat with a pair of chopsticks. So, this is a heaven for dimsums and sushi lovers.
Even before you dig into their dimsum and sushi, try their refreshing white fungus salad. This salad has to be the best you have had tasted at any place so far. The freshness of the ingredients and the kicks from the in-house seasoning makes every bite memorable.
The dimsums are not the everyday stuff that you see at eateries that serve Asian food. To make it presentable and show his craftmanship, the chef uses natural ingredients to add colour to the dimsums.
Hashi was earlier a hole in the wall sort of an eatery in Jubilee Hills. That is how Nishita and Sandeep wanted to test the market. With their menu and experiment with food falling in place, the duo decided to shift to a more cosy place. Inside Hashi, the choice of colours set the right mood. Everything has a calm serenity about it, reminding you of the traditional Japanese tea-houses that one sees on food and travel channels. In fact the beauty of the place will make you ask about teas (in spite of it not being on the menu).
- USP: Authentic Japanese dishes
- Where: Road no. 11, Jubilee Hills
- Cost for two: approx ₹1500
Hashi also doesn’t have lot of dishes, but the team is happy to put out dishes that are not available at every other eatery. And frankly, if you are looking to gorge on chilli chicken and crispy corn, then Hashi isn’t the place for you.
Here, one should look forward to try the seared salmon, tuna and eel sushi and their array of Japanese fried rice.
