Carnatic musicians give us their food favourites from the sabha

The scene, both musically and food-wise, is really happening in Chennai during Margazhi. I’m a regular at most sabhas, but the Music Academy has always been my favourite for the food and ambience. The whole experience there is vibrant. This year, Balaji’s Pattappa has taken over catering at the Academy and they are my favourites. Usually, cereals is what we have for breakfast at, this is the time I binge on my South Indian favourites. I really like their kasi halwa. You have to be in Chennai to witness this celebration of music and of course, food.

While the sabhas are filled with different menu sets, it’s always the elai sapaadu that stands the test of time. I remind myself and draw a lot of parallel to music where artistes provide many varieties in the contour (akin to the elai sapaadu) set by yesteryear doyens. My personal favourites have been the payasam at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, besides the chakkara pongal and akkaravadisal.

I’ve always loved food the most during this season because each sabha comes up with its own signature dish. This variety is what attracts me. The Woodlands at Narada Gana Sabha is famous for its rasa vada, while the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha has always done wonderful kasi halwa. I love the coffee at Bharat Kalachar and MFAC. When I’m in the mood to experiment, I head to Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaaru which has sheer variety in their food...they even had a paan dosa!
