Annapoorna and Boomerang launch the Mysurpa icecream in Coimbatore for Deepavali

Mysurpa in ice cream? That sounds like a doubtful marriage, but one scoop down , I am a convert. It may be an ice cream, but there is definitely an unmistakable grainy texture of Mysurpa and an after taste of ghee.

Two iconic brands of the city, Annapoorna and Boomerang, launched the Mysurpa icecream, in time for Deepavali. “We have used the best of ice cream recipes from Boomerang and balanced it with the rich taste of Annapoorna's Mysurpa,” says Tharun Vanjimuthu, son of P Vanjimuthu, Managing Director of Boomerang Icecream. Tharun joined the company last year as Technical Director after completing his food science degree in Sydney. His team spent over two months to perfect the balance of flavours. “The besan flour and ghee that go into the making of Mysurpa lends it a grainy texture and of course the lingering after taste of ghee. We have also added a sauce made out of Mysurpa.”

Talking about the association, he says, it goes a long way. “When my father Palaniswamy Vanjimuthu started his first Boomerang ice cream outlet in the 1990s, K Damodaraswamy thaatha, one of the founders of Hotel Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar, supported him. When we started supplying ice cream to hotels, Annapoorna was our first customer. The families have known each other for over two decades,” says Tharun.

The idea for this new dessert came about during a random conversation between Tharun and Jegan S Damodarasamy, the eldest grandson and third-generation entrepreneur of Annapoorna. “We wanted to offer something like a unique Indian sweet experience and here we are,” smiles Tharun. Jegan says, “We are family. We are launching this festival special with a lot of happiness.”

Jegan says the idea was brewing in his mind during his travels abroad. “ I saw savoury flavours of ice creams that used bacon and lobster! I thought why not try something similar with our traditional sweets. Transferring the Mysurpa flavour to an ice cream was a challenge the Boomerang team took up. The result is this creamy ice cream that tastes like Mysurpa.”

Jegan hopes these kinds of experiments will keep the younger generation hooked to traditional fare.
