SuperChef Chennai brings food from across the world to the city through a cook-off and carnival

It’s going to be about food, food and more food in the city this weekend. With SuperChef Chennai back for its fifth edition, gourmands in the city can look forward to sampling different cuisines and, of course, have the chance to interact with some of the best chefs in the country.

Organised by the Madras Cosmopolitan Ladies Circle 38 and Round Table 94, the event started off as a fund-raiser. Since its inception, SuperChef has been about getting aspiring chefs to compete against each other, but this year, the organisers decided to shake things up a bit. “Since last year, we’ve also begun organising the International Food Carnival for food lovers, so there’s something for those who aren’t really into cooking but do enjoy a well-made dish,” says Shweta Reddy, chairperson, Ladies Circle 38.

The event is slated to take place on February 4 and 5. The cook-off will be at The Park — the preliminary round is on Saturday morning and the finals on Sunday.

“The cook-off is a three-stage process. The registration is a submission of recipes that are then short-listed by the judges. The first round requires those selected to bring pre-cooked dishes to the venue for the judges to sample. Of these, 12 are selected in each category (there are three categories in all). The next stage is the finals, which is a high-pressure but fun event, with those short-listed being handed their challenge on the spot,” explains Reddy.

For food lovers looking to try different cuisines, the food carnival will take place on Saturday evening (from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.) at Amir Mahal.

“The last time round, we had stalls put up by the various Consulates present in the city, apart from commercial vendors and home bakers and home cooks. This time too, we have a similar line-up with some exotic cuisines on offer, such as Burmese, Kashmiri wazwan, Parsi and French. The idea is to offer foodies an authentic experience,” Reddy says.

So, foodies can look forward to sampling everything from a rista to sushi and waffles to nasi degang.

It isn’t just food that the carnival has to offer. There’s also jazz music to set the pace for the evening. “It’s an entire experience,” says Reddy.

The cook-off will be judged by Rajesh Radhakrishnan, general manager, The Park; Chef Ashutosh of The Park; and celebrity chefs such as Vicky Ratnani of NDTV Good Times, Sanjay Thumma of Vahrehvah fame, and Aditya Bal who authored The Chakh Le India Cookbook.

Proceeds from the event will go towards charities, including Sanjeevi, a primary healthcare centre in Maraimalainagar.
