To celebrate her 45th birthday, fitness trainer Kiran Dembla challenged herself to get six pack abs and celebrate it with a photo shoot. She says this was one of the many challenges that she keeps setting for herself; others include entering a professional body building competition, learning the nuances of Deejaying and climbing the Everest base camp.

However, it all started with her need to lose weight and get fit; since then she has not looked back. “After my two children were born my weight was 76 kilograms. I was desperate to lose the kilos, so I joined swimming. Learning to swim was not in my scheme of things, I needed to begin somewhere, so I took it as a challenge. That helped me build my stamina. Following this, I wanted firm muscles. So I joined the neighbourhood gym,” she says.

That was the stepping stone for Kiran’s fitness routine. She learnt the basics for her own fitness routine and was beginning to love the phase in her life. “It was an absolutely new turn and I couldn’t stop wondering about my overall well-being,” she recollects.

No excuses

Kiran’s six pack abs at the age of 45 is her answer to women who say ‘at this age it is not possible.’ “I have no super power. I am like everyone else. Fitness should be on everyone’s priority,” she reiterates.

As a fitness trainer she sets herself as an example to those who give excuses for not finding the time to begin a fitness regimen. Any form of physical activity done apart from house work is good she says. “It is not about how much one cooks or cleans. An extra hour dedicated to focus on one’s fitness and health is very important,” says Kiran. She should know because that is how she stepped into the world of fitness.

Kiran’s inquisitiveness about body building was her next pursuit. She says observing the guys work on their muscle building and definition made her curious about women’s body building. “I was told that not too many in the city are into it. I asked my trainer if he would train me; he was more than willing to and so that was my next challenge,” she laughs. She was 37 when she decided to professionally compete and participated in the World Body Building Championship in Budapest in 2013. She didn’t win, but came back with knowledge, she says. “There is a lot to learn from everyone,” adds Kiran, who then aspired to become a DJ and did so. She believes in the mantra ‘it’s one life; don’t stop learning.’
