Vanity goes green

Care about chemicals, but won’t compromise on looks? These might be the makeup brands for you

If you happen to be the kind of person who is worried about chemicals and what you put on your skin and in your body, but don’t want to give up on your red lipstick, then green beauty brands are something that may interest you.

With a general theme of natural ingredients with little or no chemicals, consisting mostly of mineral make-up and cream products, these brands can really pack a punch. However, be warned, they do come at quite a price.

Tata Harper

As a brand, Tata Harper is currently on every ‘best list’ in the beauty industry. Primarily a skincare brand that specializes in outstanding products that are entirely chemical free, Tata Harper is mostly organic. A majority of the ingredients that go into her products are grown in her 12,000-acre farm in Vermont, with each one being added for a specific reason – hydrating, protecting, clarifying and so on. Tata Harper is available at Cult Beauty.

Products worth trying: Purifying Cleanser (₹4,595), Concentrated Brightening Essence (₹11,280) and Very Bronzing Cream Bronzer (₹3,000)

RMS Beauty

World renowned make-up artist, Rosie Marie Swift, created RMS Beauty around the principles of the Raw Food movement. Her mineral-based products are designed to enhance, not hide natural beauty.

A lot of her products are well worth the price tag, being mostly cream based, extremely emollient and absorbed into the skin rather than sitting on top of it, like a lot of products do. Victoria’s Secret models such as Giselle and Miranda Kerr have proclaimed themselves to be avid users of this brand, which allows your skin to have that perfect ‘glowing from within’ moment. RMS Beauty is available on Cult Beauty.

Products worth trying: Living Luminizer (₹2,500), ‘Un’ Coverup Concealer (₹2,340) and Beauty Oil (₹5,015)

Lilly Lolo

If you want your make-up ingredients to be natural, but still want enhanced pigment or coverage, Lilly Lolo is the brand for you. The owner, Vicki, began making mineral make-up products in her house over 10 years ago with a focus on make-up that suits everyone regardless of skin type. Made in the UK, it is now available in shops worldwide and you can order from their website lillylolo.co.uk.

Products worth trying: Natural lipstick in Scarlet Red (₹ 1,112), Natural Lipstick in Berry Crush (₹1,112) and Coralista Cheek Duo (₹1,872)

Jane Iredale

With the tagline ‘the Skincare Make-up’, Jane Iredale was the first brand to create make-up with skincare benefits way back in 1994. Her products were created with the idea of combining several steps into one, so make-up wouldn’t take up too much time. For example, her mineral powders aim to be a foundation, concealer, powder and sunscreen all in one, which can be built up, layer by layer, depending on desired coverage. Jane Iredale products are available on FeelUnique.com.

Products worth trying: Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer (₹2,645), InTouch Cream Blush in Connection (₹1,805), Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Red (₹1,615)

Although green beauty brands are getting increasingly popular, it doesn’t mean mainstream brands are necessarily bad for you. It’s upto you to decide what suits your needs and your skin type. However, if you’re in the mood for a splurge or a change, give one of these products a go. Some of them can be life altering.
