glossing over Fashion

The naked truth

Want to look like you woke up gorgeous? Here’s what you’ll need.

A year ago, when Alicia Keys went anti-makeup, several celebrities followed suit, with a barrage of posts. She has since gone back to wearing a minimal amount of product which has in a way made the ‘no-makeup’ makeup look more mainstream. If you’re inspired by Keys, Jessica Alba and Emma Watson, the ‘barely there’ look is far easier to replicate and create than you think.

As someone who firmly believes and follows the ‘less is more’ mantra, here are some of the newer product releases that can help you get started.

Barely-there makeup begins with well prepped skin. Moisturise thoroughly if you want light to reflect off your face, giving you that healthy, fresh complexion.

The Josie Maran Argan Moonstone Priming and Highlighting Oil (₹3,080 for 50 ml) is a product that can be used over and under makeup by most skin types. It has holographic shimmer that boosts radiance that can make any product you use above it glide on better and melt into the skin. For base, the newly released NARS Velvet Matte Foundation Sticks (₹2,890) are almost like tinted moisturises in stick form — allowing for easy application and on-the-go touch-ups. NARS base products will always have a special place in my makeup stash and kit because of how perfect they get their undertones.

Typically, I would just use a bit of extra foundation under the eyes when I’m trying to keep the skin looking flawless yet natural, but the NARS Soft Matte Concealer (₹2,065) is a full coverage concealer, and not entirely matte as the name would suggest. It sets, allowing you to skip the powder if you’re so inclined.

The Glossier Wowder (₹1,411) is a blurring setting powder great for precise powdering of the hotspots of your face, and going over the rest of the area with a large fluffy brush. It doesn’t leave the skin matte or flat, but helps it look more velvety. With any powder, always make sure to use it after you have used your cream products.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter (₹2,822) is a great product for adding light to the high points of the face without visible shimmer. It can almost be considered an added boost of hydration thanks to the infusion of coconut.

If you’re looking for a sculpting powder or a blush, the new Makeup Forever Artist Colour Sculpt, Blush and Highlight Powders (₹1,475) are worth checking out. It allows you to customise your own face palettes with a variety of colours that come in matte and shimmery textures.

As for the eyes, or the lips, tone on tone is something I particularly love. The Bite Beauty Multistick (₹1,475) is a favourite of mine as it can be used on the eyes, cheeks and lips. But if you’re a powder eyeshadow person, the new Bobbi Brown Nude Drama Eyeshadow Palette (₹3,785, Limited Edition) contains all the matte and shimmery nudes you would possibly need.

Finally, Urban Decay’s Vice High Shine Lipsticks are great for a juicy, glossy but non-shimmery pout.
