Huma Qureshi is all about power dressing, even on the Cannes red carpet. Last year, at her début, she rocked a beige Nikhil Thampi pant-suit, embellished with platinum chips on the sleeves and trousers. “I wanted to stand out in a sea of gowns,” she says, adding that she was going for a “sharp, minimalist, yet edgy and statement” look. At her second visit to the French film festival — as a Grey Goose ambassador for their ‘Live Victoriously’ campaign, along with Kangana Ranaut and Diana Penty — she channelled the same energy.
Qureshi has certainly come a long way since she was at Cannes for the début of her movie, Gangs of Wasseypur, in 2012 — she then sported a flowing blue skirt, paired with simple white T-shirt and a black jacket. But on day one at Cannes 2019, the Leila actress sported a sequinned double-breasted blazer dress by Balmain, with gold Stella McCartney heels. She followed it up with another boss look in monochrome red by Nauman Piyarji: a strong-shouldered suede-wool blazer with a tulle and Chantilly lace skirt. Stylists Shaurya Athley and Ayesha Amin Nigam completed the outfit with diamond jewellery on her ears and wrist from David Morris.
Girl power
More feminine looks were reserved for the next couple of outings, like the bespoke white Angus Kirkby couture dress, with a structured bodice and feather detailing on the hem. She also picked a voluminous black Mae Paris gown with ruffled sleeves for a photo call, and stuck to a dark theme for the Chopard party hosted by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. This time around, it was a flowy Ralph Lauren jumpsuit.
The one that got everyone talking was of course, a grey Gaurav Gupta creation, which was a mass of ruffles, sequinned lines and flowing train, paired with blue chandelier earrings from Chopard. Qureshi wore this for the première of Terrence Malick’s historical drama, A Hidden Life . And not to be left out of the white trend that’s sweeping the festival, she opted for another Gaurav Gupta outfit: a white sari with a silver-embellished cape. Don’t miss the Fabergé ring she’s sporting.
