The tables had a clutter of make-up brushes, foundation creams, mirrors and lips sticks. The 27-year-old Sheriff, who is a make-up artiste based in Chennai, demonstrated the techniques of applying make-up on herself.

Applying concealer under her eyes, she said, “This is how you hold the sponge, fold it slightly and gently dab it over the skin.” Her hands moved quickly. “When you are using eye-liner, start from the outer portion of the eyelid. This way, it will be thick at the outer edge and thinner inside.”

Sheriff changed brushes and applied moisturiser, primer, foundation, concealer, eye make-up and lip colour. The result was evident when she was done. Her skin looked flawless, with an unmistakable glow on her cheeks (contouring and blush did the trick).

The participants then began to experiment, as Sheriff moved around, explaining and correcting them. One wanted to know what shade of lipstick would suit her most, and another participant demanded to know if she had applied the base (primer, concealer and foundation) correctly. “This foundation is good for your oily skin type. It stays long too”, Sheriff told one of her students. There is childlike enthusiasm and, in the end, everybody managed to get the right look.

Sheriff said her interest in make-up started at an early age. She took up online tutorials before she enrolled herself for a professional course. “Make-up covers blemishes and enhances natural beauty,” she says and adds that technique of applying cosmetics is very important.

When asked about the latest make-up trend, she explained about contouring. “It is a technique of using shadows and highlights to shape one’s features in the most flattering way. Darker shades are applied under cheek bones, below the jaw line and on either side of the nose. It makes one’s nose look sharper and also covers up the double chin.”

She advised everybody to take care of their skin by scrubbing it twice a week, and using face mask and moisturiser daily. She also told make-up enthusiasts to always use a lip liner to outline their lips before applying lip colour to add definition. She agreed that social networking sites have a great role in today’s booming make-up industry, “There are a number of channels and pages that give tutorials. I reach out to the public through my Facebook page and Instagram handle. I don’t have a YouTube channel, but I am planning to start one for giving make-up tutorials in the near future.”
