• The designer’s work has often melded technological innovation with traditional techniques. His début couture show, titled Chrysalis, showed his mastery of the same. From the first few lehengas in ivory, embroidered with silver and gold, and paired with draped bustiers, to gowns in tones of ruby, emerald and black, it was all about the transformation a woman undergoes when she puts on a dress that has taken weeks to create. Apart from this literal chrysalis, the subtler context of his own transformation cannot be ignored. A graduate of NIFT, New Delhi, Aggarwal has grown into a designer of note because of his signature creations — dresses that fan out at impossible angles because of the acrylic and plastic strips sewn into the fabric, as well as multi-dimensional embroideries that pop out like actual flowers, but achieved in man-made materials.
