Akshay Narvekar talks Bombay Shirt Company’s USP

Ever since it started its operations in 2012, Bombay Shirt Company has been one of the most sought after platforms for the well-dressed gentleman. Putting style back into men’s shirts, thanks to their custom made designs which are tailored to perfection, in a short span of seven years, the brand has grown to 16 stores across India, including an outlet at Jubilee Hills that opened a couple of months ago. “Bombay Shirt Company (BSC) was born out of my personal quest to wear custom- made shirts that are high on quality and are easily accessible to a larger audience. With one store in Kala Ghoda and an online portal to start with, 2012 was all about experimenting, trying, testing and learning.” smiles the brand’s founder Akshay Narvekar and adds, “After seven years we have now grown to include a store in NYC and Dubai. The journey has been nothing short of exhilarating.”

The USP of the shirts from BSC has been its fabric which are carefully sourced from some of the finest mills across the globe. From luxurious Egyptian cottons to tencels, they work with an extensive range. Lately, they have been working with a lot of wrinkle-resistant and stretch fabrics that are both, functional and long lasting. They have also started women’s shirt which are custom made taking in the customer’s preferences. Akshay says that their target audience is someone who prefers a personalised experience when it comes to dressing. He elaborates, “All our stores, be it in India or abroad, follow a standard process – right from designing a shirt to manufacturing it. Our extensive range of fabrics helps us cater to people with diverse tastes across the world.”

The key to their success is because of their strength in customisation. He elaborates, “All our shirts are made from scratch once an order is received — be it at our stores or through our online shop. We hold zero inventory, which helps further our quest to become a sustainable business from an ecological point of view. By not holding any ready pieces in stock, we try our bit to reduce wastage. Also, for those who need help in designing their shirt, our in-store stylists and master tailors help them choose options keeping the customer’s personality in mind”

Into the store

The store in Jubilee Hills is roughly 450 square-feet and designed in BSC’s classic and minimalist aesthetic. Answering a question on their foray in the heart of Deccan, the young entrepreneur says, “Hyderabad has always been on our minds — we have had a strong resonance with our online customers there, so having a store in the city was inevitable.” Retail in India is now caught in the cross chairs of online and offline sales and Akshay says, “Very soon, the lines between offline and online are going to blur completely. This may sound clichéd, but it is reality. Our upcoming technology upgrades, user journey flows and processes will take into account this shift in shopping habits. We hope to be at the cutting edge of omni-channel distribution in India.”

Considering opening stores in NYC and Dubai a personal highlight, the ISB alumnus remarks that it’s overwhelming to see the brand expand to many cities in India. While the future looks bright with many expansion plans in the offing, we needed to ask one question before we let go of the spiffy businessman – what can we catch him in, when he isn’t wearing his brand? “Monochrome basics from the likes of Uniqlo, Everlane and Ami,” he smiles.
